Our store teams are a key community hub for people to help neighbours in need. When a natural disaster strikes or neighbours face a crisis, we are there to help. From providing immediate assistance through food and supplies to keeping our doors open as an essential service, we step up when our neighbours need a helping hand.
Hurricane Dorian was one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in history, resonating through the Bahamas, the Southeastern United States and across communities in Atlantic Canada.
Atlantic Canadians were impacted by heavy rainfall, torrential winds and severe power outages. We stepped up to provide close to one thousand lunches (about $10,000 in food) to Nova Scotia Power crews as they worked hard to reinstate power in homes and businesses.
Our stores donated perishable and non-perishable food to Feed Nova Scotia to help local food banks and rebuild meal programs. Our operations team in Atlantic Canada worked around the clock to ensure the safety of our fellow teammates and their families. We pledged $25,000 and through the generosity of customers, raised an additional $50,000 for the Canadian Red Cross to address humanitarian needs in the Bahamas, where communities were hardest hit.
Spring often brings devastating floods to communities in New Brunswick and our Sobeys stores are always there to help residents through the uncertain time. In 2019, we donated more than $1,000 in water to the hardest hit communities, helping those working on flood recovery efforts. Sobeys stores in New Brunswick communities added to the effort, delivering meals and gift cards to the evacuated families.
