Sobeys Inc. made an additional donation to the RCMP Foundation in memory of Constable Heidi Stevenson, the 23-year veteran of the RCMP who died in the line of duty, protecting the people of Nova Scotia.
Shortly following the tragedy, all Sobeys, Foodland, Co-op, Lawtons Drugs, Needs, Fast Fuel, and Pete’s Fine Foods locations in Nova Scotia ran an in-store fundraising campaign to provide customers with an opportunity to donate to the Fund. The residents of Fort McMurray and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo have been through a lot in the last few years. In 2016, the communities were ravaged by a devastating fire and in the Spring of 2020, the community experienced massive flooding that displaced thousands of residents. On May 1, 2019, the Ottawa River rose to unprecedented levels and thousands of homes were affected by flooding. Residents were forced to leave their homes and settle elsewhere until the flood levels declined. We stepped up to donate $5,000 in gift cards to feed more than 1000 families affected by the flooding as well as community and relief volunteers through the Salvation Army. The Sobeys Kanata and Stittsville stores rallied together to donate another $2,000 in gift cards to ensure those in need had access to healthy food.
Spring often brings devastating floods to communities in New Brunswick and our Sobeys stores are always there to help residents through the uncertain time. In 2019, we donated more than $1,000 in water to the hardest hit communities, helping those working on flood recovery efforts. Sobeys stores in New Brunswick communities added to the effort, delivering meals and gift cards to the evacuated families.
